McArthur welcomes purchase of third islander aircraft

Orkney’s MSP, Liam McArthur has welcomed news that Orkney Islands Council is set to purchase a third islander aircraft to improve connectivity across the north isles.
The funding for an additional aircraft was secured during negotiations earlier in the year between the Scottish Government and Scottish Liberal Democrats over the budget for 2025/26.
Having a third islander aircraft available should help increase the frequency of inter-island direct flights, improve capacity and reduce cancellations.
Commenting, Mr McArthur said:
“I’m delighted that a third aircraft is being added to the inter-isles service, thanks to funding secured during the budget negotiations with government earlier this year.
“This additional aircraft will help improve connectivity, opening up more opportunities for those living and working in the north isles.
“As well as more frequency and capacity, I look forward to the third aircraft improving accessibility of the service. Over the past 18 months, I have been raising concerns about the inability of those with reduced mobility to access the islander aircraft. This has resulted in some elderly island residents missing out on routine hospital appointments and opting not to travel.
“It is vital, therefore, that this funding also allows seating to be removed from the aircraft on certain flights to make it more accessible for passengers with mobility issues. After all, any lifeline service should be accessible to everyone. While further improvements will almost certainly be needed, a re-rolled aircraft operating scheduled services each month will be an important and very welcome step in the right direction”.
