Liam McArthur meets with Marie Curie

Orkney’s MSP Liam McArthur has today welcomed news that a dedicated team of Marie Curie health assistants will now be based in Orkney, following a successful pilot of service provision over the past year.

The health care assistants will work alongside District Nursing Teams, supporting the provision of palliative care services for terminally ill patients and working across the community and in local care homes.

Commenting, Mr McArthur said:

“I’m delighted to learn that Marie Curie services will be available here in Orkney on a longer-term basis. The trial provision over the past year has confirmed the real benefit to patients and their families from having access to additional specialist palliative care support.

“The dedicated Marie Curie support teams enhance the accessibility and quality of palliative care services, which are vital in ensuring the needs of patients and families at the end of life are met with dignity, compassion and care.

“I’d like to thank the teams at NHS Orkney and Mare Curie for their work to establish the longer-term viability of these services in Orkney and hope they can be further embedded into the provision of palliative care locally for years to come.”
