On World Suicide Prevention Day 2026, Orkney's MSP Liam McArthur has endorsed the Samaritan's campaign to highlight the importance of taking action if you think someone might be suicidal.

Commenting, Mr McArthur said:

"This World Suicide Prevention day, I am proud to support the Samaritan's campaign encouraging us all to intervene if we think someone might be suicidal.

"60% of those with lived experience of suicide said their suicidal thoughts had been interrupted by someone close to them. 14% said their suicidal thoughts had been interrupted by a stranger.

"You don't have to be an expert to save somone's life. Just showing that you care can make all the difference.

"Anyone who might be worried about a loved one can find out more about the Samaritan's campaign at https://www.samaritans.org/support-us/campaign/world-suicide-prevention-day/. You can also contact Samaritans 24/7 on 116 123."
