McArthur supports local initiatives during Volunteers’ Week 2025

Orkney’s MSP Liam McArthur has pledged his support for Volunteers’ Week 2025, taking place from 2nd-8th June.
Led by Volunteer Scotland, the event is organised to honour the efforts of charities and volunteers, acknowledging the value of volunteering in providing essential services and fostering community relations across Scotland.
Today, Mr McArthur attended the Connect Project Awards in Orkney, which celebrated the achievements of young people involved in local volunteering initiatives and joined in handing out awards to the winners.
Last month Mr McArthur also opened the Shapinsay Reflective Space at the Shapinsay Kirk, which was created as part of Voluntary Action Orkney’s Remembering Together Project.
Commenting, Mr McArthur said:
“Volunteers’ Week provides an opportunity to pay tribute to the exceptional contribution of volunteers to our local community.
“Here in Orkney, we are fortunate to have access to a truly excellent array of voluntary services, and Voluntary Action Orkney do incredible work to coordinate and facilitate a number of organisations to provide invaluable support across the community.
“This Volunteers’ Week I have been delighted to partake in celebrations of the young volunteers at Connect, and to have been involved in the opening of the Shapinsay Reflective Space, a brilliant community initiative made possible by the tireless work of volunteers.
“Volunteer work is vitally important to the strength of community here in Orkney and beyond, and I hope this Volunteers’ Week will inspire more people to get involved.”
