McArthur reacts to STV job losses
Orkney’s MSP, Liam McArthur has today responded to reports that STV is set to cut 60 jobs in the coming year, which will mean a loss of 10% of the workforce.
STV announced the news last week and have been in discussions with OFCOM about the cost-saving measures, which are reported to include proposals to cease broadcasting some regional news bulletins across Scotland.
The issue was raised at FMQs today, when the First Minister expressed his concerns about the move and offered assurances that the Cabinet Secretary for Culture, Angus Robertson will be engaging with STV and OFCOM.
Commenting on the news, Mr McArthur said:
“The job losses announced by STV are swingeing and will be a devastating blow to the workforce, particularly those affected.
“However, the wider impacts should not be underestimated. The closure of the Aberdeen studio and the end to regional bulletins will impact media coverage across the north and in the islands, leaving these communities more poorly served.
“I welcome the First Minister’s confirmation that the Scottish Government is engaging directly with STV and will be making representations to the regulator, OFCOM. I would urge STV to demonstrate its commitment to rural and island communities and re-think its approach.”
