McArthur calls for increased support for sporting officials and facilities
Orkney's MSP Liam McArthur has today urged the Scottish Government to ensure local authorities receive adequate funding to invest in community sporting facilities, events, and opportunities.
Speaking during a debate on Scotland's Summer of Sport, Mr McArthur stressed the need to support coaches, volunteers and officials who facilitate sporting events and activities across all levels of play. He highlighted the incredible success of the 2025 Orkney Islands Games as an example of what communities can achieve when they're equipped with the appropriate tools and support in this area.
Mr McArthur also spoke of the upcoming Junior Inter County and North Isles Sports events taking place in the Northern Isles this summer, two sporting events that have helped foster friendship and healthy competition between Shetland and Orkney and within the Orkney isles over the years.
Commenting further after the debate, Mr McArthur said:
"Scotland fans are gearing up for an historic summer of sport, and with that comes an opportunity to capitalise on the energy and excitement surrounding these events to improve the quality of and access to sport across the country. It is within that context that I welcome the Scottish Government's announcement of their Summer of Sport programme, which will provide opportunities for children and young people to get involved in sport.
"These events and programmes would not be possible, however, without the generous time and commitment given by volunteers, coaches, and officials, or without the facilities, pitches, and clubs where they take place.
"It's essential that those involved in facilitating sport at the community level are properly supported in their efforts so that these opportunities remain open to future generations.
"During the Orkney Island Games last summer, members of the community came together to support athletes from all over the world across a week of exciting competition. It was an excellent demonstration of what can be achieved when communities have that proper support and investment in place."
