McArthur calls for government support to tackle ophthalmology delays at NHS Orkney

Orkney’s MSP, Liam McArthur has today called on the Scottish Government to provide additional short term support to NHS Orkney to tackle the ophthalmology backlogs which are seeing some constituents wait more than three years for treatment.
In response, Jenni Minto, the Minister for Public Health and Women’s Health, recognised the scale of the problem, which was raised with the Cabinet Secretary for Health in a meeting with NHS Orkney earlier this year, and committed to look at ways in which the government might further support efforts to tackle the delays.
Commenting after the exchange, Mr McArthur said:
“Constituents with progressive conditions simply can’t afford to wait years for treatment. The risk of deterioration and in some cases permanent sight loss is real and terrifying for constituents affected.
“I know from my regular discussions with NHS Orkney that a range of steps have been taken to try and manage the backlogs but is clear that there is not the capacity to meet the scale of the problem.
“I welcome the Minister’s willingness to look at further means of addressing the issue. These waiting times are unacceptable and islanders deserve better.”
