McArthur calls for further targeted support for small businesses
Orkney’s MSP, Liam McArthur has today pressed Finance Minister Ivan McKee to commit to providing further targeted support for small businesses impacted by increases to rateable values.
Mr McArthur highlighted concerns raised by The Association of Scotland's Self-Caterers that the 2026 valuation model is leading to unprecedented and unsustainable rises in rates for self-catering properties.
Commenting, Mr McArthur said:
“Having lobbied the Finance Minister over many months, I’m very glad to see that the 100% rates relief for island hospitality and tourism businesses has been maintained in the budget published this week. This is welcome, and recognises the specific challenges that island businesses face with operating costs.
“It is clear, however, that further targeted support will be needed for small businesses in island communities and across Scotland if they are not to face a financial cliff edge. Self-catering is just one example of a sector facing unsustainably high increases in rates. I heard from a local operator in Orkney recently who has been presented with a 270% rates rise.
“This is just one illustration of why further support will be needed and why the Finance Minister must continue to engage with the business community and assessors to address these concerns.”
