Commenting on news that NHS Orkney has been moved to the first stage of formal escalation in the NHS Scotland Support and Intervention Framework, Orkney MSP Liam McArthur said:

“It has been no secret that NHS Orkney’s financial position has been precarious for some time now, but confirmation of this formal escalation is clearly concerning.

“During my conversation with the Chief Executive about the implications of this announcement, I was assured that this process should result in additional support being provided by NHS Scotland in an attempt to bring NHS Orkney back into line with financial plans.

“Co-operation between national and local NHS leaders throughout this period will be essential in achieving financial stability, while at the same time crucially safeguarding the needs of patients and reassuring the wider public.

“I have offered the NHS Orkney leadership whatever support I can through this process, including seeking specific commitments from Scottish Ministers. Clearly the hope is that NHS Orkney can be helped to turn around its financial position quickly and put on a more sustainable footing.”
