Orkney Liberal Democrats have unanimously selected Liam McArthur MSP to defend his seat at the Scottish Parliamentary elections next May.

Liam McArthur has been Orkney's MSP since 2007 when he succeeded fellow Scottish Liberal Democrat, Jim Wallace. Mr McArthur was subsequently re-elected, with a 10.5% majority, at the last Scottish elections in May 2011.

Prior to entering the Scottish Parliament, Liam McArthur worked as a Special Adviser to the Deputy First Minister and former Orkney MSP, Jim Wallace in the then Scottish Executive. Mr McArthur, who grew up on Sanday, lives with his family in Burray.

This will be the third election Mr McArthur contests as he looks to extend his 8 year service working for the people of Orkney.

Commenting, Mr McArthur said:

"I am delighted to have been selected to stand again in next year’s Scottish Parliament elections. My thanks go to members of the local party for giving me their unanimous backing and their on-going support.

“It has been an enormous privilege to serve the people of Orkney over the last eight years. It is a role I have enjoyed enormously but never one I have taken for granted. Over the coming months, I hope to be able to persuade voters in Orkney to put their trust in me to continue representing them.

"In serving our community since 2007, I have always done my best to make sure Orkney’s voice is heard loud and clear at Holyrood and beyond. To achieve this, I have been happy to work with others locally, but I have not been afraid to speak out and challenge the SNP government when in the interests of the people of Orkney.

"On lifeline transport links and infrastructure investment; air ambulance and healthcare provision; broadband and mobile phone coverage; delivery charges and fuel costs; support for farming, fishing and tourism as well as a range of other issues, I have made Orkney’s case to Ministers and others with the power to act.

"At all times, I have tried to be accessible, approachable and accountable. That would continue to my approach if re-elected.

“The next election will be a tough fight, but voters in Orkney have a clear choice. I will always put the people of Orkney first and I hope, in turn, that they will back me to serve them for another term."

Richard Thomas, on behalf of Orkney Liberal Democrats, said:

"I am delighted the Orkney Liberal Democrat membership has unanimously selected Liam McArthur as our candidate for next May’s election.

"The choice facing voters in Orkney at next year’s Holyrood election is stark: they can re-elect someone with a strong track record of putting the Islands first, or they can have another SNP cheerleader putting party before people.

"Liam is well respected as a hard working MSP who delivers time and again for Orkney. There is no doubt, everyone knows someone Liam has helped. I look forward to campaigning tirelessly to return Liam McArthur as Orkney's MSP."

Note to Editors

To mark the selection, Mr McArthur was delivering surveys on Saturday in Birsay with activists before joining others for a silent vigil in front of the Cathedral in support of refugees fleeing the conflict in Syria and other parts of that region.
