McArthur responds to statement on developing Scotland’s hydrogen economy

In response to the Scottish Government’s statement on developing Scotland’s Hydrogen Economy in the Scottish Parliament today, Orkney’s MSP Liam McArthur commented

“I welcome the Scottish Government’s recognition of the potential hydrogen has in Scotland’s future energy mix. As the Minister acknowledged, hydrogen could help provide answers to some of the specific challenges faced by island communities in decarbonising our economies.

“Orkney is already at the forefront of innovation in this area, with creative solutions being tested in areas such as transport and heat. That momentum needs to continue.

“Nevertheless, in pursuing these opportunities, the Scottish Government must not take its eye off the ball on the need to improve energy efficiency and reduce overall demand. This is the only way to ensure Scotland meets its emissions reduction target in 2030 and achieves net zero by 2045.”
