Responding to the announcement that BT is the preferred bidder for the northern lot of the R100 contract, Orkney’s MSP Liam McArthur commented:
“I’m pleased that a decision has now been reached for the northern lot of the R100 programme, but the government must now get on with finishing the job. The 2021 deadline has already been quietly abandoned and any further delays will add to the growing frustration.
“Businesses and households in Orkney need certainty so that they can plan ahead. It’s also crucial that rural and island areas that experience the poorest coverage are prioritised in the roll out of high-speed broadband though an ‘outside in’ approach.
“Investment in broadband was one of the key areas highlighted in the recent National Islands Plan consultation and islanders will now expect to access the broadband speed that they deserve.”
