Commenting on the announcement today by Flybe and Eastern Airways that they plan to launch services on a number of routes, including Kirkwall-Aberdeen, Orkney MSP Liam McArthur said:
"This announcement appears to have caught most people by surprise but if competition on lifeline routes serving the islands can deliver lower fares, better connections and improved reliability then that is to be welcomed.
"Much will depend, however, on the detail of what Flybe and Eastern Airways are offering. From an Orkney perspective, the Kirkwall-Aberdeen service is obviously particularly important for NHS patients attending hospital appointments. I am therefore keen to learn more about how Flybe and Eastern plan to meet the needs of patients as well as those of other users of this key service.
"I will also be seeking reassurances from the Transport Minister that there will be no cuts to Air Discount Scheme support".
