McArthur calls for emergency programme for homes to reduce emissions

Speaking after the Scottish Greenhouse Gas Statistics 2020 showed a 12% reduction as covid restrictions took effect, Scottish Liberal Democrat climate emergency spokesperson Liam McArthur MSP said:

"Covid has done more to curb emissions in one year than this Scottish Government has managed to deliver in years.

"We know more than 50% of energy used in Scotland goes into heating buildings and the SNP-Green's funding promises fall short of meeting retrofitting targets. The government needs to urgently scale-up retrofitting activity and capacity to ensure we reduce emissions, fuel poverty and the bills of struggling families.

"Emissions from domestic transport also remain far too high. However, SNP-Green mismanagement of ScotRail is driving more people into cars and their support of a third runway at Heathrow will send 75,000 extra flights per year into our skies.

"Without structural change this progress won't last, but all this SNP-Green government have to offer is more hot air."
