Speaking after the Ministerial Statement on Protecting and Improving the Water Environment, Scottish Liberal Democrat spokesperson for the climate emergency Liam McArthur has today asked the government to launch an annual reporting of sewage spillages.
The Ferret revealed that sewage spilled into Scotland's waterways on more than 12,000 occasions last year alone.
Speaking in the chamber, Mr McArthur said:
“We saw SNP MP Ian Blackford pour criticism on England, while officials here were admitting privately that Scotland is way behind.
“It was clear that the environment watchdog's first concern wasn't for the health of our streams, rivers, and communities but for their own reputation.
“The government should launch an annual reporting of sewage spillages, the public deserves to know that there are interventions in place to put a stop to these spillages. The Minister should provide a clear strategy and state whether the plan is to eliminate these overflows altogether or it is a phased target operation.”
