Scottish Government must be clear about support for island produce, says McArthur

Orkney MSP Liam McArthur has today called on the Scottish Government to set out plans to deliver on their pledge to support island produce.

During the election campaign, the First Minister launched a manifesto of 10 pledges for Scotland’s Island communities. In the manifesto, Ms Sturgeon committed to “£5 million investment to support island and rural produce”. Since then there has been little detail on what this would involve.

Mr McArthur has therefore tabled a series of Parliamentary Questions pressing the Scottish Government to set out how it plans to spend the £5 million package and how businesses in Orkney can access support.

Commenting, Orkney’s MSP Liam McArthur said:

“Orkney’s food and drink sector has built up an excellent reputation over the years. This is reflected in high demand from consumers locally, nationally and internationally, including the many tourists who visit our islands.

“I therefore welcome the Scottish Government’s plans to invest £5 million to support island and rural produce. Indeed, many local businesses would argue that it cannot come soon enough.

“Ministers must now set out the detail of how they plan to use this funding and how businesses will be able to access it. If the government is serious about supporting future success, I would hope and expect Orkney businesses to do well in benefiting from this latest initiative.”

Mc McArthur is set to meet with the new Islands Minister, Humza Yousaf, next week.

ENDS.
