Congratulating John Copland and Jean Leonard on their New Year Honours

That the Parliament congratulates John Copland and Jean Leonard, both from Orkney, on being named in The Queen’s New Year Honours List; recognises that John Copland, who worked at Orkney Auction Mart for over 50 years and served as the Chief Auctioneer during some of this time, was awarded an MBE for services to agriculture and the rural community in Scotland; acknowledges that John has been involved with many of the Mart’s major milestones and successes during his 50 years of service, including the amalgamation of Kirkwall Auction Mart and the West Mainland Mart to form the Orkney Auction Mart in 1993; believes that his contribution to island life and the Orkney community, however, extends much further, whether through his passionate support of local rugby, football and, of course the Ba, to the time and energy he commits to a wide range of local charities and voluntary organisations; recognises that Jean Leonard, who was Head of Music at Stromness Academy for 30 years, was awarded an MBE for services to music and the community in Orkney; understands that Jean has worked tirelessly to bring music to communities across Orkney and make events more accessible and inclusive for young musicians during this time, including providing free individual tuition to hundreds of children and young people; acknowledges the role that Jean has played in organising prominent events such as the Stromness Christmas music pageant, while also serving on the Orkney Arts Society Committee for 40 years, as well as many other extra-curricular and community groups; believes that Orkney’s strong and growing reputation as a hub for musical and artistic talent owes a great deal to the hard work, commitment and enthusiasm shown by Jean over many years; thanks both Jean Leonard and John Copland for their many years of dedicated service that has seen them make such a significant contribution to the Orkney community and the lives of others; welcomes this well-deserved recognition of those outstanding efforts, and wishes them both the very best in their future endeavours.
