Liam McArthur MSP today warned that SNP legislation that could change the way that universities are governed poses a real and present threat to Scotland’s higher education system.
Mr McArthur was speaking after MSPs debated the Higher Education Governance (Scotland) Bill at Holyrood. Universities Scotland have warned that the legislation could see universities lose out on millions of pounds of funding.
Speaking after the debate, Liam McArthur MSP said:
“The regulatory powers Ministers are looking to take through this bill present a real and present threat to our universities. The fact that many remain unclear and subject to secondary legislation only makes matters worse.
“Universities Scotland have been unambiguous on the threat that changing the law poses to university finances. The reassurances that Ministers have provided have been wholly unconvincing.
“These changes could cost universities millions of pounds of crucial funding. Hardly, I would argue, a price worth risking – far less paying.”
