Following confirmation that the UK Government has accepted an offer from Orkney Islands Council to provide homes for two families fleeing the conflict in Syria, Orkney MSP Liam McArthur said:
“No-one witnessing the horror unfolding in Syria at present can have failed to be moved by it. Many people in Orkney, I know, have been desperate to offer what support we can as a community to those directly affected by the conflict.
"I am pleased, therefore, that two Syrian families will now be coming to Orkney. There is no doubt that they will need support to help them acclimatise to their new lives here in our islands, but I have every confidence that this will happen.
"In the meantime, it is clear that lengthy delays are preventing similar offers of help from other local authorities across the country from being taken up by the UK government. Given the circumstances, this is highly regrettable and I hope the Home Office can now accelerate the process for resettling families".
