Speaking in response to the statement on armed police in the Scottish Parliament, the justice spokesperson for the Scottish Liberal Democrats Liam McArthur MSP said:
“All of us – today in particular - are grateful for the dangerous and difficult work that police officers volunteer to do on our behalf.
“I am pleased that lessons have been learned about how changes to this sensitive policy should be handled. It is important that any decision like this is properly communicated.
“The Cabinet Secretary has been clear that the arming of police for routine duties is not what is being proposed today. After all, communities will hold him to assurances given in 2014 that both Police Scotland and the SPA will need to test public acceptance before any such change is made.”
